Fr. John and Danny examine Israel’s crisis at Rephidim, where thirst, fear, anger, and impatience lead the people to question whether God truly has their best interests at heart and to “put the Lord to the test.” The striking of the rock to bring forth water becomes a powerful Christian image of Christ, whose pierced side pours out the “living water” of the New Covenant. Ultimately, the desert represents the spiritual journey of every person, where the interior spirit must struggle to bring the body’s senses and appetites under God’s direction while trusting in His patient provision.
