In this podcast, Fr. John and Danny examine Israel’s battle with the Amalekites in Exodus 17, portraying Amalek as a brutal enemy and exploring the difficult biblical theme of God commanding Israel to destroy its mortal foes. The scripture becomes a Christian allegory in which Moses’ raised arms represent prayer, Aaron represents the will, Joshua foreshadows Christ, and Amalek symbolizes the demonic forces against which Christians struggle. The result is that prayer is fundamentally an act of spiritual warfare, requiring the will to support the interior spirit so that we can resist evil rather than be overwhelmed by our physical and emotional nature.
