In the podcast this time, Fr. John and Danny explain how Joseph’s suffering leads him into what Christian mystics call the “dark night of the soul,” a divinely permitted experience in which God feels absent so that deeper love and purification can occur. Drawing on St. John of the Cross, our hosts distinguish between the active purging we undertake and the passive night in which God withdraws felt consolation to reshape the soul. Joseph’s encounter with the cupbearer and baker marks the beginning of this deeper descent, showing that when God intends to build someone high, He often digs painfully deep first.
